On August 9, the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev made a working visit to Republic Mari-El. The head of the state personally inspected the situation in the region living under emergency rule due to large-scale forest fires.
At the Internal Affairs Directorate in Ioshkar Ola city, the president of the republic Leonid Markelov and the Minister of Interior of the republic Artem Khokhorin acquainted him with technical novelties applied by militia employees.
The head of Mari-El emphasized that the Government of the republic paid much attention not only to the public order maintenance and the counteraction to criminality, but also to creating proper service conditions for militia employees. For instance, the new building of the Internal Affairs Directorate with state-of-the-art equipment was put in operation hardly a year ago.
Dmitry Anatolyevich personally got acquainted with the work of the alert department of the Internal Affairs Directorate in Ioshkar Ola city and the patrol squad control center where information about all crimes committed in the territory of the Republic's capital is concentrated.
The Chief of the staff of the Internal Affairs Directorate Vladimir Protasov showed the head of the state the real time work of the navigation system which is added to the armory of the patrol squads of militia. The satellite navigation makes it possible for the duty officer to trace the movement direction of squads which ensures their better management when processing messages about crimes.
Telling about the work of video surveillance cameras mounted on squares, railway stations, boulevards and in other busy places of the capital of the republic, the militia employees demonstrated a record of a robbery captured by one of video surveillance cameras. Thanks to this record, the robbers were detained without delay. Till the end of the year 80 additional video cameras will be installed in streets of Ioshkar Ola. All these are high-speed cameras, and the high resolution makes it possible to consider faces of people going by and number plates of moving cars in detail.
The employees of units of the Ministry of Interior of republic and the Internal Affairs Directorate of the capital were given a unique opportunity to personally speak to the President of the country, to ask questions of interest for them as far as the draft law "About police" published on August 7 is concerned.
A sore point for many militia employees is the absence of accommodation, therefore the President was asked question about the allocation of apartments to militia officers during the conversation.
The visit to the building of the Internal Affairs Directorate was concluded by a ceremony of handing of the state awards to employees of the Emercom, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of forestry, and the Ministry of Defense who had distinguished themselves during the suppression of forest fires which have been raging in the territory of Republic Mari-El for a month.
